Savannah on my Mind

Savannah on my Mind

Post by: Rick Hoening

I wonder, ‘If the trees of Savannah could talk, what stories would they tell…

Would they tell us about pirates of yesterday or the history of cotton exports and of a revolutionary town’s planning dating back to 1733?  They speak to us about a community that treats hospitality as an art form or of a St. Patty’s Day Celebration that defies explanation and of a city’s splendor so profound that it stopped even Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in his tracks from destroying it?  They might tell us about a group of women who banded together to protect this extraordinary treasure and inventing the modern preservation movement in the process. These plus so much more if only the tress could tell us about Savannah.

Recently my family and I went to Savannah for a Sunday outing. We had lunch at one of the many little cafes on River Street that even allowed our min-pin Spike to dine with us. This was only the second time I had taken my twin granddaughters to Savannah. As usual, I babbled about the history, but these trees (an urban canopy unequalled in the United States) could offer a more lot more about the real story. The trees would tell you about things occurred in the past that have transformed Georgia’s first city into one of the most vibrant and ingenious economies in the southeast.

Behind Savannah’s historic façade are energetic residents, a progressive government plus an innovative business community. Beneath those many cobblestoned streets lie 38 miles of fiber optic cable and even parking garages. Those huge container ships that lumber past the picture post card River Street Waterfront are headed to and from the fastest growing and fourth busiest port in the nation.

Artists, musicians and writers have long been a fan of the jewel box squares and seductive coastline, serving as the muse for many accomplished creative practitioners. Many know of Johnny Mercer, of “Moon River” fame, who is a native and is buried at Bonaventure Cemetery encircled by his lyrics engraved in stone. Writers Conrad Aiken and Flannery O’Conner both hailed from here as well. Many fascinating artists discover the Savannah muse each year and come here.

Savannah’s has a history of technological innovation. The first cotton gin came from here plus the also first steamship that crossed the Atlantic Ocean – so it’s in the city’s veins. The headquarters of a host of technology-related business including everything from giant Gulfstream Aerospace to smaller graphic design and software development pioneers.

Savannah has become an enticement for creative talent and why not? Art galleries are literally everywhere. One of the world’s most respected design schools, the Savannah College of Art and Design, makes its home here. The Savannah Music Festival has developed into one of the leading and most diverse music festivals on the East Coast. The Times of London placed it on its list of “The best events around the world in 2009” (the only event in the United States to make the cut).

Savannah’s charm is something out of a fairytale – it’s the most beautiful city in the nation. It’s not just saying that – they’ve actually earned the bragging rights on this one. USA Weekend Magazine declared Savannah one of the “top 10 Most Beautiful Places in America.” The New York Times named it one of the “World’s Top Ten Trendy Travel Hot Spots.” Conde Nast Traveler picked Savannah as a “Top 10 U.S City to Visit.” Southern Living placed us as second on its “Best Southern City” list. And Outlook Magazine called Savannah one of the “Top 25 Places to Live & Work.”

Getting here is easy. One great place to stay is >> Best Western Central Inn

Central to all the History

Experience southern hospitality at its best at this Savannah hotel set amidst a city full of rich history and charm. The Inn is conveniently located near the thriving center of Savannah and the picturesque banks of the Savannah River. Hotel guests can explore the rich history of the city as they stroll along cobblestones on River Street or visit nearby Fort Polaski, Fort Jackson or Hunter Army Airfield. Shopping, dining and night life are abundant at the City Market or at Tybee Island, while the famous Harbor Queen cruise boat offers a different perspective. The Best Western Central Inn provides all the right amenities for comfort and leisure with a complimentary continental breakfast and an outdoor swimming pool. Each tastefully appointed guestroom offers cable satellite television, coffee makers and more. Additional amenities include Free Internet access, secretarial services, dry cleaning as well as meeting and banquet facilities. For exceptional service and comfort in Savannah, make an online reservation today at the Best Western Central Inn. Rooms start at $63 / night.

When you’re in Savannah, you know it. The City’s character has matured over time by looking to their heritage – honoring and loving it – then driving change to realize dreams. Our gnarled, twisting trees – many hundreds of years old – have witnessed this change, but remain firmly rooted in our community’s history. If they could talk, these trees would spin remarkable tales of Savannah’s past. But they would tell even better stories yet to come about what lies ahead.

How to Haggle made Easy

How to Haggle made Easy

Post by: Rick Hoening

Relax & Enjoy the Adventure

Many love to haggle when they travel. The seasoned traveler can be ruthless in their pursuit for value, probing for sales and squeezing every last freebie out of their own rewards programs or discount travel associations. So why is it that once we’ve actual arrived at our destination, we’re so quick to pay the full amount advertised on so many price tags? Is it the best price? Market-research firms estimate that consumers who haggle are successful 78% of the time and not just in overseas markets but right here at home. Winning tactics, like the ones we list below, are just as useful in stores as in souvenir shops when you travel. To help you up your odds of getting a bargain, we took the advice from several people who make a living haggling. You’ll be surprised how much money a few simple words, in the correct order, can save you.

It’s easier than you think to talk your way into a discount. We came away with very specific phrases and tactics that will get you the price you want—whether you’re in New York or Old York, they work.

“May I speak with the manager?”
In many places where you wouldn’t customarily expect to haggle, like in small boutiques or chain stores,  it’s important to find the staff member who has the influence to adjust the rules. Then try to speak to them out of earshot of others. Busy managers will be more likely to move on prices if they don’t fear having to do so for the all the others who eavesdrop on your requests. Take timing into account, managers commonly have more time to talk during morning or evening hours or near the end of the month when they may be trying to meet quotas. In this economy, store manager’s have heard everything. You’re not going to be the first person to ask for a discount.”

“That looks interesting, But”
It doesn’t matter if the item is the perfect gift for your friend or the best looking widget you’ve ever seen. Curb your passion by using the adjective interesting, which denotes curiosity, while still indicating some detachment. Once a vendor sees how much you like something, game over: there’s no more bargaining. Make them sell to you. Be prepared to walk.

Ask the question & then Shut-Up
Sometimes the most effective thing to say is nothing at all. He who speaks first, loses. When you reach an deadlock, don’t say anything, just listen. The person you’re negotiating with will often make a compromise just to end the uncomfortable silence. On the other hand, ask lots of questions if someone says, ‘How much do you want to pay for this?’ A respond may be, ‘How much do you think it’s worth?’ That kind of verbal volley forces the seller to define their terms, putting you in a more informed bargaining position.

“Excuse me, Can you help me with this?”
Don’t give the notion that the sale is all about you. By dwindling your ego by asking for help, people will react to that. It’s not ‘I can’t pay for that’ or ‘I need a lesser price.’ Above all, never start with ‘I want to bargain”. Using a friendly tone from the beginning to establish the negotiations as more of a conversation than a transaction, works best. Greet the seller like a friend and ask about his or her day plus flattering remark about their shop. People may think it’s naïve, but establishing a rapport at the beginning allows you to be firm without seeming stubborn once things get heated.

“Let me give you my number”
Imagine that you’ve fallen in love with a vintage-cut-glass chandelier at a flea market, but the seller really can’t meet you on price. Love it andleave it? No, you should always leave your number behind. A lot of times, it’s easier for sellers to off-load items for less than they’d like at the end of the day. Instead of having to pack everything back up, transport it home and store it. That means late afternoons at flea markets can often be a bargain bonanza. If you don’t get the price you want at the end of the day, there may still be hope. Sure enough you may be contacted after the fact by sellers who had a change of heart. Remember if you are traveling, you also have to get it home.

“Thanks for helping me. I’m sorry that we couldn’t get together on this”
As a traveler myself, I knows how to make the best of a bad situation. As the ole poker player will tell you, “know when to hold ‘em, when to fold ‘em and when to walk away.” Don’t be afraid to walk away. You didn’t have it when you walked in the door. Saying ‘Thanks for helping me. I’m sorry that we couldn’t get together on this.’ This lets them know that you are ending the negotiations. Mentioning the good-natured time spent on the negotiation might soften up a merchant and result in a price reduction. Also vacationers have an advantage because time is on their side. Being able to negotiate at your leisure when you travel, forces the seller to invest more time in the relationship. For many, the more energy spent in pursuit of something, the harder it is to give it up. Know when to walk.

Some people love to travel just to haggle for bargains while others just do it for the fun of it. Remember to not take it personal and always be ready to walk away with no ill feelings.  Good luck…

Holiday Travel 2010

Traveling over the Holidays 2010

Post by Rick Hoening

It's time to get out there...

When you decide to Travel over the holidays, there are many things to consider to make the trip an adventure. You must consider all factors involved  to create the perfect adventure.  The winter holidays are celebrated in many different ways through out the world as well as different parts of our own countries. Let’s look at the best way to enjoy the holiday travel this year.

During the Holiday Travel Season, you need to plan ahead to properly enjoy your trip. For international travel, The State Department’s Office of American Citizens Services and Crisis Management (ACS) administers the Consular Information Program, which informs the public of conditions abroad that may affect their safety and security. Country Specific Information, Travel Alerts & Travel Warnings are vital parts of this program. See there site HERE.  They can help with Passports and or Visa’s you may need to be ready to travel.

Holiday Travel is one of the greatest adventures in our lives to see the sites and sounds of various destinations when your travel this time of year. So many places will go all out with their festivals and decorations to celebrate the holidays. Many places will transform their main streets from being just another city street to awesome decorations of lights, banners or even snow and ice sculptures. It’s is a once a year event for them.

Holiday Travel is also a great time to get back together with family and friends. Some families get together but once a year for the holidays. Many do this by simply driving over for the day while some plan an all out extravaganza. I’ve seen entire families on cruises for a week or ski trips together. One of the best ways to make this happen is to join a discount travel association. There are only a few full services travel sites that truly do offer the best of all worlds for you. They include great service, real guaranteed discounts plus 24 hour services (just in case). The best one I’ve found is HERE

The main thing is to get out there and travel to enjoy the holiday and how each places celibrates their traditions. Take in all the festivities and see all there is to see in different parts of the world with your family and friends.  No more coulda ~~ shoulda, this year it is we’re gona’.

Enjoy your travels and post some of your favorite travel comments and pics here for all to enjoy.

GREAT NEWS from PYXISM

PYXISM Team Work

PYXISM – News Release 10-4-2010

Success is Yours:

Post by: Rick Hoening

PYXISM is growing way too fast and I am so excited to share this information with you that I can barely keep my fingers on the keyboard. Over the past 9 months, we’ve been working hard to build a strong foundation that will stand the test of time and provide lifetime financial security for you and your family. During that time we’ve also been listening and we’ve heard you and we know that you’ve been wanting to see new things happen bringing even more exciting value on your behalf.  Well PYXISM has done it.

We’ve been working vigorously to be sure that each and every PYXISM Associate could generate increments of $15,000+ any given month, week or day and it gets even better than that. We have been able to secure working relationships with additional companies so that we can provide you with the very best travel and vacation products in the industry so that you can not only enjoy the money that you make but also create priceless memories for you and your families.

Recently we have also been working with entities and individuals in the industry who can bring extreme value to you in growing your income.  These relationships that have been developed will give you the opportunity to have the most powerful month you have ever had.  In fact, PYXISM had it highest commission payout ever in our history on Tuesday, September 21.  It was 38% higher than the next highest commission payday ever.  Many of you have really taken advantage of the opportunity to gain personal and team momentum during the summer and the results show it.  August and September are 2 of our 3 highest commission months and we still have 2 more commission payouts in September so I believe August and September will be our 2 largest commission payout months since PYXISM began.

So what does all this mean for you?  It means get ready, put your seat belt on, don’t waste any time.  In October, we believe without a doubt, we are expecting to pay out multiple six figures in commissions to our Associates.

And we’re not stopping there. We’re so excited to announce to you that through negotiations with another entity we created even more value for you.  I want you to know, I intend between now and the end of the year to help each of you and your families to get back on top financially, to get back on top where you belong, to help you keep your home or quit that second job so you can spend more time with your family.

The Answer to the Question is HERE

Thank you so much for your faith & trust in our vision to provide you with the very best travel with PYXISM & income opportunity in the industry.

Stay tuned for the next update on PYXISM.  We have a HUGE announcement for you next few week and we don’t want you to miss it.

Where do I want to go?

PYXISM LADDERS

Update 10-3-2010

Post by Rick Hoening

PYXISM Ladders are changing the face of business marketing. In just the first couple days of PYXISM Ladders have been an absolute huge success.

After looking at all the PYXISM Ladders in the down-lines, I have to tell you our team is very dominate.  There are so many of you on the TOP of one or the other or BOTH of the ladders.  Congratulations to all of you and congratulations to those of you that cycled this weekend.

Imagine only cycling the PYXISM Compass Ladder and PYXISM Horizon Ladder just once every 2 weeks. Then cycling the PYXISM Navigator Ladder just once every month, trust me, you don’t have to be a recruiting machine to do this.

But lets look at the money.  Doing the this would put 18,000 USD in your pocket every single month. EVERY MONTH

Go RIGHT NOW…log into PYXISM and get started today.

I really think you owe it to your Family to change your financial situation once and forever.

How, you ask?  Follow these easy steps.

1. Sign Up .  that was too easy right.

2. Simply bring One (1) Guest to the live web-cast every Eve. at 6 PM PDT / 9 PM EDT and do a 3-way after the call with me.

IF.. you actually did this consistently you would be earning the money I just talked about in 30-60 days.

It really is just that simple and there is not one person reading this right now that could not use an extra $18K per month and there is not one person reading this that could not bring one person to the web-cast every eve.

Success is a choice, YOUR CHOICE….

PYXISM Ladders is the answer.

Nine Great Lies of Sales & Marketing-# 9

Nine Great Lies of Sales & Marketing-# 9

Post & Editing by: Rick Hoening

Original Article by: Perry Marshall

Lie #9

“You can’t charge premium prices for a commodity product.”

Here's your key to success

If you’ve been fooled into thinking this is true, you’ll live by cheapest price & die by cheapest price all day long. People who believe this have thin profit margins and low morale. But they don’t have to & neither should you.

Case in point: Starbucks, AOL and Microsoft are ALL in commodity markets but have managed to re-define the rules such that they are
relatively immune from price competition.  Perry Marshall talks about this in his Sales & Marketing Principle #9 in ‘Guerilla Marketing for Hi-Tech Sales People.’   (www.perrymarshall.com/gm)

I can assure you that there are THOUSANDS of small businesses as well who use the same shrewd tactics to sidestep the whole issue of ‘commoditization.’  They are doing very well yet today.

Being a ‘commodity’ is the pits. The worst situation you can be in is to sell something that’s readily available from dozens of other people.

But you can change that. Perry Marshall has a very specific terminology and strategy for re-inventing your Sales & Marketing  business paln and making it clearly stand out from your rivals, even if you ARE in a commodity market.

It’s the same thinking process that AOL, Microsoft, McDonalds and Starbucks all use – seemingly invincible companies that dominate
fiercely competitive commodity markets.

Let’s take AOL as a brief example. In the early Internet days you could become an Internet Service Provider with a few thousand dollars and some phone lines. Some ISP’s even gave away their services for free. But AOL maintained a price of $23/month – just for dial-up.

Now the landscape has changed greatly for ISP’s and AOL has had a harder time competing. However… the reasons for their initial success are still worth studying.

How did they do it? Because AOL was fundamentally different than all other ISP’s. They have FORCED themselves to come up with unique
ways of making themselves non-interchangeable with others. They have AOL instant messenger, all kinds of online communities and
proprietary software.  Once you’re on AOL, it’s hard to get off.

You can lift ideas right out of AOL and Microsoft and cleverly apply them to your business, so that apples-to-apples comparisons to your
competitors are difficult or impossible.

If you are in a commodity business – then you MUST do this. *It’s not an option.* When you do, it makes everything you do vastly easier
and more effective.

Nine Great Lies of Sales & Marketing-# 8

Nine Great Lies of Sales & Marketing-# 8

Post & Edited by: Rick Hoening

Original Article by: Perry Marshall

  Lie #8

‘If you want to educate customers about new ideas, you have to buy ‘em all doughnuts, lunch or dinner and do a big dog & pony show.’

If You Keep Doing What You're Doing.....

As Perry Marshall puts it: Is your product or service something that’s really cool, really useful and really helpful to people — but the problem is nobody realizes how much they need it? There was a new technology that I sold at two different jobs.  Basically it was another one of those ‘great ideas’ that could solve lots of problems for people, but nobody knew they needed it.

So it was very hard to sell!  Perry Marsahll said he’d go into companies, buy lunch for all their people and give enthusiastic, informative presentations about this really cool new technology that could make their lives infinitely easier.

Ever done that before one before ?

They’d file in, consume your pizza, listen apathetically to the presentation and file out. They’d go back to their cubicles, I’d go back to
my office and they wouldn’t spend a single dime on anything.  At this point , this whole Sales & Marketing situation really sucked.

Then Perry Marshall found this guy named Jeff Paul in the financial planning field who’d figured out how to solve the entire problem by charging people for seminars.

Here’s what Jeff Paul did:  He used low cost advertising with direct mail to get people to fork over real money to come to his tax seminar.  Then he charged them another fee if they wanted to meet with him for a private ‘consultation.’  On top of that, he got paid the usual commissions on the financial products they bought.

Not only did Jeff Paul make money every step of the way, he closed twice as many sales as he did before plus his customers followed his financial plans more carefully.

He built an enormously successful practice because he was positioned from square one as the expert that he truly was, instead of a peddler.

Are you thinking what I’m thinking? ‘What if that could work for me???’

So…Perry Marshall put together a 3-day, $1500 training course for this technology.  He wrote a 4 page sales letter that ‘sold the sizzle’ plus *really* explained why it was worth the time and money to show up and really, really learn this stuff.

Two months later, Fortune 500 companies were sending their employees to this class, learning how to use our equipment and paying for information that I formerly couldn’t give away with free pizza.

A major trade organization even licensed our new course and started selling it to their entire membership.  We were getting paid to teach prospective customers how to use our products!

Our competitors were HACKED OFF.

You can probably do something similar in your business.  It’s a lot easier than you might think. Your competitors will be really mad at you too.

Since the Internet can deliver information to people for very low cost and sometimes for almost nothing, it can be the key to doing “missionary work” for cutting edge products very inexpensively.

My favorite tool for doing this is a White Paper.  A White Paper is your statement about how a problem should be solved.  A well-written, well-promoted white paper is worth its weight in gold because it educates customers about your way of doing things cheaply and it’s a terrific tool for generating Sales & Marketing leads.

Perry Marshall has written a 5-day mini course on writing and promoting White Papers.  To subscribe, just register at HERE

The first installment will arrive in your mailbox in about 10 minutes.

Tomorrow, we”ll attack the last lie – Lie #9:

‘You can’t charge premium prices for a commodity product.’

Talk to you then,

Nine Great Lies of Sales & Marketing-# 7

Nine Great Lies of Sales & Marketing-# 7

Post & Edited by: Rick Hoening

Original Article by:  Perry Marshall

  Lie #7

‘In Sales & Marketing-People need to see your advertisement 6-12 times before they’ll remember it.’

Is this working YET?

As Perry Marshall put it,” If your ad does not work the first time, it ain’t going to work twelve times either, FACT.”

This lie is used to sell all sorts of advertising space and campaigns that are a waste of money in any Sales & Marketing system.  Because the people who tell you this ALSO tell you you can’t measure advertising and you have no way of knowing whether they’re right or wrong.

You pull the big black checkbook out of your desk, spend a bunch of money and you have no idea  that you got back.  What a horrible feeling that is!

First, figure out how much response you need to make it pay off.  Play with the elements of your ad, running it in an inexpensive place until it gets the response you need.  THEN run it six to twelve  times.

When you measure the effectiveness of advertising and systematically improve it, you’ll discover that some ads produce 20 times as much results as others.  When you discover formulas that truly work, you won’t just run them 12 times, you might run them for years and you’ll make profits all along the way.

Perry Marshall talks about this in ‘Guerilla Marketing for Hi-Tech Sales People’   in Principles number 3 & 6 of Sales & Marketing.  When you actually test marketing messages for performance and experiment with them, you’ll find that tiny changes in wording have ENORMOUS effects on response.

Example: Recently Perry Marshall was experimenting with an advertisement running for a client.
He did not change any words; he just reversed the order of TWO SHORT LINES of text.  The response to the ad increased by THREE THOUSAND PERCENT (!).

It’s absolutely SCARY to think about what can happen if you’re not testing things and it’s absolutely
incredible what happens when you are.

By the way, you know where those two lines of text were?  They were on a little advertisement
running on the right side of search page on GOOGLE Google has a system called Google AdWords which enables you to bid on any words or phrases you want, have your ads ONLY show up when people search and you only pay when people click and visit your website.

It’s hands-down the FASTEST way I know to generate Sales & Marketing leads.  Perry Marshall has written a free 5-day mini-course on Google Adwords:    http://www.perrymarshall.com/google

The good news is, 95% of companies don’t test their advertising.  Your competitors almost certainly
don’t.  If you do, you have a clear advantage over them.

  Tomorrow we’ll attack Lie #8:

‘If you want to educate customers about new ideas, you have to buy ‘em all doughnuts, lunch or dinner and do a big dog & pony show.’

Talk to you soon,
